[Take a screen shot of this card and review it each day before putting that sheet on your bunk!]

Avoid itchy regrets and sleep like a saint.
1. Strip & Scan
Lift the fitted sheet at the corners of the mattress—especially the top (head area).
Look for:
Tiny black dots (poop)
Reddish-brown stains (blood)
Shed skins or live bugs (apple seed size)
2. Shine & Slide
Use your phone flashlight to check:
Seams, tufts, and folds in the mattress
Wooden bed joints, slats, and corners
Back of the headboard, if there is one
3. Avoid These Zones:
Bunks pressed tight against a wall
Beds near heavy curtains or tapestries
Musty or almond-like smells = warning sign
4. Don’t Do This:
Don’t put your backpack on the bed
Don’t leave clothes lying around
Don’t assume a fancy place is bug-proof—check anyway!
5. Do Ask This:
“¿Algún problema reciente con chinches?”
(“Any recent problems with bed bugs?”)
Most hospitaleros will answer honestly and appreciate the heads-up.
Pro Pilgrim Tip:
If you’re unsure about a bunk, lay your liner or groundsheet over it first. You’re not being paranoid, you’re being prepared.
